Domain woes
Thursday, September 14th, 2006It seems you have to keep on top of your domain registrations if you don’t want them to expire. luckily no one was clamoring to get their hands on mcallister.ws. But fans of my brother’s website will be glad to know that mcallister.ws is now locked up until 2011. Hopefully I remember to renew it then too.
Unfortunately I couldn’t snarf it with my preferred registrar, they were showing it as not available. I had to go back to register.com, luckily they upgraded their site and I don’t have to email support to get them to set the name servers to mine instead of theirs.
Anyway my wife should be able to check her email no problem after the DNS gods are satisfied with the propagation time. Thank’s Michelle for noticing the problem before someone snapped it up.
Finally a New PC
Thursday, September 14th, 2006Well I am getting tired of the ASPRE laptop (mycroft) that doesn’t boot and when it does capital ‘w’ can’t be typed with the right shift key and the machine I built about 6 years ago (sherlock) not booting right, and struggling with some other issues, and just having a computer that is no longer zippy enough for the bloated crap I want to run on it.
So I finally broke down and ordered a Dell Dimension E521 (Dual Core AMD 64 X2 4200+ 1GB 533 MHz DDR2 160 GB SATA drive) Actually a really good deal I think, I did a whole bunch of research and I think I could have gotten a similar machine for slightly less but got scared off by comments at reseller ratings. Paid $639 no monitor, a low end video card Geforce 7300 LE (that blows my current one away) of course the Geforce 6150 that is integrated into the Mobo of this new CPU blows my current one away. I couldn’t find the right incantation to get into Dell’s site where I could just not get the PCIx card and deal with the integrated one, and also get XP Media Center version and get 2% off for ordering through a link on Temple’s site. My plan is to eventually save some bucks and buy a kickin video card and probably another disk to use the RAID capability. This new machine I will call Gilead. I even went to newegg and a few other sites to price out the components and I couldn’t beat the deal. It seems the world has moved on.

Masala Chai
Tuesday, September 5th, 2006We have one of those Keurig coffee makers at work, and while I despise coffee I love Tea, especially Earl Grey and Green Tea. I have managed to keep that stocked here pretty well through various cajoling and convincing one other co-worker to imbibe the Earl Grey.
With our latest order we just got a sample pack of Gloria Jean’s Chai, and it may turn into my new mini-obsession, has a nice Cinnamon taste, and was very refreshing. Actually when I first started drinking I was disappointed it smelled very much like Cinnamon, which is clearly the most superior of all spices, but the taste was pretty weak. I did a quick search and found here that “chai must have sweetness or the spices seem to lose their full robustness.” I added one packet of Splenda and found the spice emboldened and embiggened, much to my enjoyment.
I now have to hide the remaining 4 packs from the sample and then somehow get more in here.
