Congratulations Chris

Chris Wing who studies martial arts with me has won the won the teen heavyweight division world title in Jiu-Jitsu. Congratulations! Teenager captures Jiu-Jitsu world championship

Sixteen-year-old Christopher Wing, who trains at Wing’s Martial Arts Academy in Trevose, has studied martial arts for 12 years. … won the teen heavyweight division world title at the North American Grappling Association’s World Championships held at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, N.J., on March 12.

Come on out and train with a champion, and of course me! I can’t recommend starting martial arts training enough to anyone, at the very least you will learn some important things about yourself.

First Degree Brown

On Saturday I tested for and received my First Degree brown belt. This is the last belt before black. I have a lot of work to do to acheive the first real advanced rank in our system, the black belt, but I am up for it. The black belt test is scheduled for December 11. And unless something unforseen happens I will be in the group testing. Here is hoping that the critter is accomodating to those 3 hours, since the dark art of birthday prediction has chosen December 6th.

Thanks to my Chief Instructor, 4th degree black belt Jim Wing for sharing his knowledge in such an unselfish, supportive and enthusiastic way.

Tournament Results

The tournament was pretty cool. And I saw people from my school (Villari’s Trevose Studio) do very well. Congratulations Nick, Sheila, Steve and Chris who all left with a bunch of hardware. Probably other representatives from my school did well also, I just didn’t have time to notice, as I was also competing. I came in second place in the “Forms” or “Katas” competition as it says on the tropy. I was pleased with my performance, The form I did was called “3 Kata” and I felt I made a good showing of it. I knew I had done well, because I wasn’t conscience that I was actually doing the form until I was about half way through. The guy who came in first, in that competetion swept the adult green through brown stripe division. I had the misfortune to draw him in the opening match of the sparring division. I lost 5 - 3, I did disagree with the last point he was awarded (I felt I blocked it with two hands) but both judges agreed he should have had that point. However, I do know that he deserved to win that competition overall.

Overall it was a good time, and I am looking forward to competing again, for no other reason than to see quite a bit of cool things done, by a bunch of good martial artists.

Also congratulations to all who competed in the Villari’s Pennsylvania Regional Martial Arts tournament. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. And I look forward to competing with many of you again.

Karate Tournament

The Villari’s regional tournament is tomorrow. I am excited to compete for the first time. I will be representing the Trevose studio, and hopefully I will make a good showing. I am competing in Forms, Point Sparring and Self Defense. Also congratulations to the Trevose Head Instructor Jim Wing, on achieving his fourth degree black belt. I think this officially acknowledges his ability to beat me up while expending no energy at all.

Brown Belt

A couple of weeks ago I tested for, and recieved my Brown Belt! I have been studying martial arts for about 14 months now, and it has been great. Everyone should at least try it out. It’s great to know you have some knowledge and ability to protect your family and yourself, if you ever need to. Especially since there is no one going to do it for you. But now I will really hammer the fundamentals for a while as I progress through the 3 stages of brown belt, and hopefully later this year or early next year I will become a serious beginner (read: black belt). Also an added bonus was the Cane and Belt clinic given by Master Rick Madore, I got to learn for about 2 hours how to use a standard wooden cane or a belt to defend myself. Weapons are cool.

Blue Belt

Oh yeah, on Saturday I tested for and recieved my blue belt. I think this solidly places me in the intermediate category. Of course I have heard black belts in my system referred to as “serious” beginners. But at least I get some new material, and a new form.

Purple Belt

I progressed to Purple belt. Now I finally get to learn a new form, well one that is the same footwork as 1 Pinon, but invovles different strikes, when doing this new form I am supposed to learn more about advanced push-pull.

I also get to learn two more Kempos and Combination number 4. (There are 108 combinations in the system).

Oh yeah, and I can buy and wear a black gi now, if I want.

Orange Belt

Today was the test, and it went very well. Master Madore (6th degree blackbelt) complimented my progress.

So anyway now I get to continue the progress while wearing a different color.

The rib bone is connected to ..

For those that don’t know, I am a yellow belt in Karate, and currently working to learn more, usually 3 days a week. I study at a Fred Villari’s studio in Trevose. The chief instructor is Jim Wing, there he teaches me Shaolin Kempo Karate.

I am in an advanced training class where I get to go to as many group classes as I can get to, and I get one semi-private lesson a week. Last night, I suffered some bruised ribs as Jim explained the finer points of showing no mercy to someone who attempted to stab you. In this case I was the simulated stabber… Ouch
However, there appears to be no permanent damage, and I derived considerable utility learning more about the nuances of footwork and lines of sight.

Additionally I now know for sure if someone tries to stab me and I get him on the ground and stomp on his ribs, he will be displeased
